Species Halictus (Seladonia) hotoni (Vachal, 1903)

Introduction

Well established populations of this species were found in the Upper Hunter Valley region of NSW in 2004-2006 and identified as Halictus (Seladonia) smaragdulus Vachal, 1895 on the basis of morphology. Subsequent morphological observations and molecular studies revealed six species within the 'S. smaragdula' complex, but none with the same mitochondrial DNA barcode as the species found in Australia. Using morphological and molecular evidence Batley et al. (2016) confirmed the identity of this species as the African Seladonia hotoni (Vachal, 1903). See Batley et al. (2016) for further information.
