Introduction

A group of helicoids introduced from western Europe, recently separated from the Helicidae as a distinct family (Barker 1999). They are herbivorous snails with small to moderate shell which, unlike some helicids, does not form a reflected outer lip of the aperture. Hygromiids differ from helicids mainly in details of genital anatomy. Six species have been introduced to Australia.
