Family HYDROZETIDAE Grandjean, 1954

Introduction

The family Hydrozetidae is cosmopolitan, and includes a single genus with 33 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). Species in this family are aquatic and semi-aquatic, and are often found fully immersed in fresh water, on the surfaces of submerged aquatic plants on which they feed (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The family is known from Australia on the basis of a single cosmopolitan species, and several records of further unidentified species (Colloff & Halliday 1998). Fernández & Travé (1984) recorded Hydrozetes parisiensis from Australia. However, it has subsequently been shown that this record is a typographical error, which should have read Austria (Fernández, pers. comm. to G. Hunt, 1992).
