Introduction
The family Holothuriidae is distributed in tropical and temperate seas. It comprises six genera. Five genera (and 14 subgenera in Holothuria) and sixty-four species are recorded in the Australian fauna.
Holothuriids are aspidochirote holothurians distinguished from other families within the order by the following combination of character states: tentacles peltate, 16–30; podia (as ventral pedicels and dorsal papillae) present; gonad in single tuft on left side of dorsal mesentery; ossicles in variety of forms including three dimensional tables, two dimensional plates and rods but not including 'C'- or 'S'-shaped rods; tentacle ampullae present; cuvierian organs sometimes present.
