Family HIRSUTIIDAE Sanders, Hessler & Garner, 1985
Introduction
Hirsutia, type genus of this deepwater family is known only from a single specimen of one species from 1000 m depth in the Atlantic, damaged during examination, plus a moult which was lost, and a specimen in poor condition of a second species from 1500 m off south-eastern Australia. Gutu & Iliffe (1998) described a species in another genus, Thetispelecaris, from caves in the Bahamas but its placement in this family is questionable.
Diagnosis
Body with numerous setules and comb-rows. Head without rostrum or eyestalks. Paragnath long and slender. Mandible and palp slender. Pereopods 2–6 with exopods and "oostegites". Pleopods short, not articulating. Uropodal endopod of 5 articles.
