Family HETEROCHEYLIDAE Trägårdh, 1950
Introduction
The family Heterocheylidae includes a single genus and 25 species, all of which are found under the elytra of beetles in the family Passalidae (Walter et al. 2009). They appear to be symbiotic rather than parasitic, but their feeding habits have not been studied. The most substantial taxonomic work on the family is by Schuster & Lavoipierre (1970), and Lindquist & Kethley (1975) reviewed the taxonomic placement of the family. Two species are known from Australia, and Schuster & Lavoipierre (1970) mentioned a single specimen that may represent a third species.
