Family HERMANNIIDAE Sellnick, 1928
- Hermanniidae Sellnick, M. 1928. Formenkreis : Hornmilben, Oribatei. Die Tierwelt Mitteleuropas 4(3): ix 1-42.
Introduction
The family Hermanniidae is cosmopolitan, and includes four genera and 111 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). They are abundant in forest litter and soil, where they appear to feed on decaying plant material and the associated fungi (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The family was revised most recently by Woas (1981). There is a rich fauna in southeast Asia and the Pacific, but until recently the Australian fauna was almost unknown. Colloff & Halliday (1998) listed only a single species of Phyllhermannia and records of other unidentified species. The Australian fauna now includes one genus and 17 species, as recently revised by Colloff (2011).
