Note
Johnston, T.H. 1934. Remarks on some Australian Cestodaria. Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 59: 66-70 notes that Haswell's (1902) specimens of the species may have come from New Zealand and not Australia. He considers Spencer's (1889) record of Gyrocotyle urna to be G. rugosa , whereas Bandoni & Brooks (1987) attribute the latter to G. maxima. Bandoni & Brooks (1987) did not include Johnston's record of G. rugosa in their revision.
