Introduction
This is a small subfamily that is defined by the presence of a smooth area delineated at the base of the second metasomal tergite.
The group is worldwide in distribution and well represented in the Australian region. Apart from the six described species, there is probably twice this number yet to describe. Previously, members of this subfamily have been considered to belong to various larger, well-established braconid groups, but current evidence places them as the sister to the Opiinae. So far, gnamptodontines have only been reared from leaf-mining Lepidoptera but no hosts are known for the Australian species.
