Patchy in pockets in stony ranges from inland north-east to central Australia, north to breakaways around head of Gulf of Carpentaria between Roper and Norman Rivers with outlier in Gregory-Newcastle Ranges, QLD—east and south around fringes of Barkly Tableland and through Selwyn Range to 'Channel Country', QLD (where east almost to Longreach—south to middle-lower Cooper Creek (formerly N Flinders Ranges), SA, and west to Eyre Creek, QLD—and, avoiding Simpson Desert, west to central Australian ranges north to Renner Springs, NT, east to Jervois Range, NT, south to Everard Range, SA, and west to Mann and Rawlinson Ranges, SA-WA—introduction to Kangaroo Is., SA, unsuccessful. Integrades with G. p. ferruginea (Gould, 1865) in west centralian ranges from western Macdonnell Ranges and Ayers Rock-Petermann Ranges to Rawlinson and Mann Ranges.
