Coastal and near-inland E Australia and adjacent off-shore islands, south on coast to Hunter River and Tuggerah Lake, with isolated population on lower Shoalhaven River, NSW, and south inland to Cocoparra Range and central Riverina (where range expanding slowly south and west), avoiding highlands of Great Dividing Range south of c. 28ºS—west to Wilcannia, Louth and Narran Lake, NSW, and to Mungindi, Morven, Augathella, Tambo and Torrens Creek, QLD—and north to the N Burdekin River catchment and coast drainage north to Mossman, QLD. Apparently intergrades with G. h. inexpectata Mathews, 1912 at north-western and northern limits across east foot of Cape York Peninsula.
