Extra Distribution Information
Coast of Pilbara and mouths of its major rivers between North West Cape (Mangrove Bay) and Cape Keraudren—also adjacent off-shore islands, including Barrow Is., Monte Bello group and Dampier Archipelago. Intergrades further north with G. p. inexpectata Mathews, 1912 into S Kimberley Division (Dampier Land and lower-mid Fitzroy and May River drainages).

Circumannual reproduction/seasonal breeder, ground-feeding seed-eater in mangroves and fringing Acacia-Melaleuca acacioides thickets and tussock grassland, feeds in open areas, rests, nests and roosts in fringing trees and thicket, wanders only locally to seasonal food sources.
