Family GABUCINIIDAE Gaud & Atyeo, 1975

Introduction

The 13 genera and 40 species of Gabuciniidae are feather mites that are found in the wing feathers and tail feathers of a variety of bird hosts (Gaud & Atyeo 1996; OConnor 2009). The most important taxonomic work on the family is Gaud & Atyeo (1975). Only a single species is known from Australia, from several species of swallows (Gaud & Atyeo 1975). As with most families of feather mites, many more species will be found when the mite fauna of Australian birds is surveyed more extensively.
