Species Falco (Falco) longipennis Swainson, 1838

Australian Hobby, Black-faced Hawk, Duck-Hawk, Little Duck-Hawk, Little Falcon, White-fronted Falcon

Introduction

Originally described as Falco lunulatus Latham, 1801 and known by this name until Mathews (1913) noted that the name was preoccupied by Daudin (1800) and hence invalid. Mathews (1913) proposed F. frontatus Gould 1838, as the next available name however he was unaware that Swainson (1838) had used the name F. longipennis in a work published in January, 1838 and thus had priority over F. frontatus Gould, 1838 which was published in April 1838. See Mathews (1916) for further details.
