Family FREYANIDAE Dubinin, 1953

Introduction

The family Freyanidae is a group of 17 genera of feather mites that occur in the wing and tail feathers of a wide variety of water birds (Gaud & Atyeo 1996; OConnor 2009). The classification of the family was reviewed by Gaud & Atyeo (1982a, 1982b, 1985) and Ehrnsberger et al. (2001). Eight of the known genera occur in Australia, including 12 species, most of which have been found on geese and ducks. As with most families of feather mites, many more species will be found when the mite fauna of Australian birds is surveyed more extensively.
