Phylum FORNICATA Simpson, 2003

Introduction

The phylum Fornicata contains anaerobic flagellates with a single kinetid and nucleus, or one pair each and includes the diplomonads, retortamonads and carpediemonads. The phylum has been placed with the phyla Parabasalia and Preaxostyla in the group Metamonada (all with basal bodies in groups of four) in the supergroup Excavata (with suspension-feeding groove of ‘excavate’ type).
