Subspecies Euploea modesta lugens Butler, 1876

Introduction

The occurrence of Euploea modesta Butler, 1866, within Australian limits has been confirmed based on a single male collected from Murray Island, Torres Strait; the specimen is closest to subspecies E. modesta lugens Butler, 1876, from mainland New Guinea (Meyer et al. 2004). Previous records of this species (De Baar 1988) belong to a specimen of E. crameri crameri Lucas, 1853 (in AM), erroneously labelled ‘Thursday Island’ (Meyer et al. 2004).
