Species Euploea corinna (W.S. Macleay, 1826)

Common Crow, Oleander Butterfly

Miscellaneous Literature Names

  • Euploea core corinna W.S. Macleay, 1826 [Morishita (1977, 1981) regarded the subspecies Euploea core corinna from Australia and the Lesser Sunda Islands to be a species distinct from E. core (Cramer, [1780]), which occurs from India, Sri Lanka and southern China, through the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra, Java and Bali. The two species are absent from Borneo, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Maluku and mainland New Guinea, but are sympatric on Bali. Ackery and Vane-Wright (1984, p. 54) provisionally maintained corinna as a subspecies of E. core, but cautioned that “at present we cannot be sure that the entities grouped under this name are even paraphyletic.” Vane-Wright (1993) subsequently divided E. core into five allopatric species, with three of these restricted to the Andaman Islands (E. andamanensis), Nicobar Islands (E. scherzeri), and Biak and Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea (E. charox), respectively, based on phenotypic and/or anatomical differences. Euploea corinna was treated as specifically distinct, although R.I. Vane-Wright (pers. comm.) notes that more work on the taxonomy is needed, especially in the narrow area of geographical overlap where E. corinna seems to have replaced the original subspecies of E. core on Bali over a period of less than 100 years (see Braby 2010)].

Introduction

Lane & Moulds (2015) recorded Euploea core corinna as "common" on the Torres Strait islands.
