Introduction
Both subspecies also treated at the specific level by some authors based on limited studies (see del Hoyo & Collar, 2014). We follow Baker et al. (2006) and Christidis & Boles (2008) in retaining E. schlegeli as a subspecies of E. chrysolophus until further work can more fully resolve the relationship between the two taxa.

In Australia breeds on Heard Island and McDonald Islands, vagrant to Macquarie Island, no confirmed records from mainland but potential vagrant to SW Australia
