Family EPILOHMANNIIDAE Oudemans, 1923

Introduction

The family Epilohmanniidae includes three genera and 59 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). The most recent major taxonomic work on the family was by Shtanchaeva (1996). The family is cosmopolitan, with high levels of diversity in tropical Africa, South America, and southeast Asia. These mites are usually found in soil in grassland and forest, but some species burrow in decaying wood (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The Australian fauna includes two named species of Epilohmannia, both of which are virtually cosmopolitan, and both of which have a series of subspecies and synonyms (Subias 2011), as well as an unidentified species in the same genus. The Australian specimens were collected in moss, litter and soil under sclerophyll forest and scrub (Colloff & Halliday 1998), and in soil under sugar cane (Walter & Stirling, 2018).
