Family ENIOCHTHONIIDAE Grandjean, 1947

Introduction

The family Eniochthoniidae is small, with only one genus and seven species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). Subias (2011) referred to the single genus as Hypochthoniella, but Marshall et al. (1987) have explained why Eniochthonius is the correct name for this genus. The Australian fauna includes only one identified species, Eniochthonius minutissimus (Berlese), which is cosmopolitan in forest soil (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). In Australia it has been been found in litter and grass under Acacia and Eucalyptus at a number of localities in South Australia. There are also several records of unidentified species of Eniochthonius from other localities, as reviewed by Colloff & Halliday (1998).
