Introduction
The family Echinoneidae is distributed in circum-tropical waters. Two extant genera are known, including one in Australian waters, represented by a single species.
Echinoneids are the only extant members of the order Echinoneoida and are distinguished from other echinoids by the following combination of character states: test ovate; peristome and periproct on oral surface; ambulacra nonpetaloid; lantern and girdle absent in adult; internal radiating walls absent; genital pores four.
