Order ECHINISCOIDEA
Compiler and date details
September 2013 - Introduction, Dr S. Claxton, Camden, NSW & Dr Reinhardt Kristensen, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
Introduction
The order Echiniscoidea consists of four families, one of which, Carphanidae, containing only the limnic species, Carphania fluviatilis, is not found in Australia.
The claws are always inserted directly into the tarsus which is never digitate. Members of this order are defined as lacking a median cirrus. Nevertheless, the Australian species of Anisonyches has a small median cirrus as does A. mauritianus from the Indian Ocean. Seminal receptacles are found only in Anisonyches and in the ‘primitive’ terrestrial genus Oreella, suggesting that the relationship between Arthrotardigrada and Echiniscoidea should be reexamined.
