Lamarck [1822, Histoire naturelle des animaux sans vertèbres, 7: 230-233] named these 7 species, and two additional ones, in Ricinula. Gray, 1847, Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 15: 139, designated Murex neritoideus, and Cossmann, 1903, Essais de paléoconchologie comparée, 5: 79, designated Murex ricinus Linnaeus as type species of Ricinula. Neither Murex neritoideus nor Murex ricinus were originally included species. Ricinulus [Desmarest, 1858, in Chenu, Encyclopédie d'histoire naturelle, Crustacés, Mollusques, Zoophytes: 174] is an incorrect subsequent spelling; = morum Röding].
