Introduction

Cuvier (1817) introduced the name 'Dolabella dolabrifera based on a specimen collected from Mauritius. However, the name was mentioned only in a footnote with no description or illustration, and thus is considered nomen nudum. de Férussac (1822) mentioned 'Dolabella dolabrifera' in a systematic list and classification of molluscs, with credit to Cuvier (1817) for the name, but again, no description was provided. Rang (1828) was first to formally describe and illustrate specimens assigned to Aplysia dolabrifera; the descriptions are sufficient to determine that the specimens correspond to the modern use of the name Dolabrifera.
