Known only from the Upper Allyn River, 3 miles SSE of Port Macquarie and Dorrigo, NSW.

Australian Endemic.

Ecological Descriptors

Adult: volant.

 

Diagnosis

Differentiated from D. multispinosus by having thorax and legs entirely dark brown to blackish with a tinge of rufous in ground colour, rather than predominantly yellow to rufous, and by having only 4 spines in set at middle of front tibia, rather than 5-6. Also, wings more intensely blackish fumose in D.atripennis. Readily differentiated from all other known Australian Dilophus by the blackish wings and larger size.
