Family DERMATIONIDAE Fain, 1965
- Dermationinae Fain, A. 1965. A review of the family Epidermoptidae Trouessart parasitic on the skin of birds (Acarina : Sarcoptiformes). Verhandelingen van de Koninklijke (Vlaamse) Academie voor Wetenschappen, Letteren en Schone Kunsten van België. Klasse der Wetenschappen 84: Pt I (text) 1-176, Pt II (figures) 1-144.
Introduction
The family Dermationidae includes about 15 species of mites in 12 genera. All are relatively benign parasites on the skin of birds, but some species, such as the poultry feather mite Rivoltasia bifurcata, may become significant pests of domestic poultry if they become abundant (Gaud & Atyeo 1996: OConnor 2009). Only two genera are known from Australia, each represented by a single species. More species will be found when the feather mite fauna of Australian birds is surveyed more extensively.
