Introduction
The family Deimatidae is cosmopolitan and includes three genera. Two genera and two species are recorded from Australian waters.
Deimatids are distinguished from other families in the order Elasipodida by the following combination of character states: tentacles peltate; retractor muscles and respiratory trees absent; tube feet present; elongate non-retractile processes present; skin thin parchment-like, brittle; ossicles comprise perforated plates or cruciform bodies.
