Family CYPRIDINIDAE Baird, 1850
Introduction
A phylogenetic analysis of the family is presented in Cohen & Morin, 2003.
Diagnosis
Carapace length varying from about 1 mm to 32 mm; surface usually smooth but ornate in some forms; posterior evenly rounded or with caudal processes or siphon; incisure always present, but not slit-like with dorsal margin overlapping ventral margin as in Cylindroberidinae. First antenna: both d- and e-bristles on 8th segment well developed; b- and c-bristles on adult male with suctorial discs. Second antenna: length of exopodal segments similar in males and females, segments usually with basal spines; endopod 1–3-segmented in female, in males usually similar. Mandibula: coxal endite usually well developed; exopod also well developed. Maxilla: coxale and precoxale with thin transparent epipodal appendages with hirsute margin; 3rd endite present; exopod well developed with 3 bristles; 1st endopodal segment with sclerotised cutting edge on posterior distal corner. Fifth limb: 3 segments present, protopod with elongate sclerotised process on posterior distal margin; exopod: 1st segment with main tooth generally consisting of 6 teeth and proximal peg; 2nd segment without large tooth. Sixth limb: limb consisting of several bristles in place of epipodal appendage, 4 segments, and end segment; posterior end of end segment usually not extending markedly past segments. Seventh limb: similar in male and female, with variation in number of bristles and types of end combs. Rod-shaped organ: generally short, bulbous, or peglike; never elongate. Furca: each lamella with 4 to 28 claws.
