Ecological Descriptors

Carnivorous, epipelagic, estuary, marine, medusivorous, neritic, planktonic.

 

Diagnosis

Cyanea with the exumbrella papillose; with bifurculate lappets; with up to 150 tentacles per cluster; with muscle folds appearing simple, separated by flat septa; with 16-20 coronal muscle folds per cluster, lacking pit-like intrusions from the gut; with angular ends to the radial muscle groups; without radial canal anastomoses; with O-isorhiza nematocysts on the exumbrella.

 

Notes

Originally described from Port Philip Bay, subsequently reported in Victoria by von Lendenfeld (1884d: 275), and in New South Wales by Stiasny (1931b), Pope (1949, 1953a). A comprehensive treatment of the species was given by Condon (1997).

Outside Australia, this species has been reported from Auckland Island by Benham (1909).
