Extra Ecological Information
Adult common in the bush and readily attacks humans, horses, sheep, fowl, pigs, cattle, dogs and bats; adults caught in light and animal-baited traps; very serious pest in some parts of Queensland, Northern Territory and the north coast of New South Wales and intertidal areas of industrial importance; possible but unconfirmed pollinator of Pterostylis ophioglossa R.Br. [Orchidaceae]; vector of Ross River virus and Wuchereria bancrofti (bancroftian filariasis); possible vector of Dengue virus; isolation of Eubenangee and reovirus type 3 virus strains from collections; experimental infection of Dirofilaria immitis (canine heartworm) leading to maturation of larvae to infective stage (to a limited degree); larva found in coastal brackish swamps and marsh pools left by high tides, crab holes, coral pockets, hollow stumps, weedy lagoons, inland waterholes, puddles, ponds, wells, ditches, freshwater pools, rock pools in salt marsh, mangrove and nipa palm swamps, seepage pools and artificial containers such as drains, boats, canoes and tanks; for extensive biological information see Lee et al.
