Adult readily attacks humans and birds; adults collected in animal-baited traps; serious indoor domestic pest in certain areas; isolation of Murray Valley encephalitis and Barmah Forest viruses from collections; larva found in water butts, drainage pits and foul ground water such as sewerage ponds, septic tanks and pools at rubbish tips.
