Introduction

Species in the family Corycaeidae typically inhabit the epipelagic zone of the world's oceans, however a few species have been found at mesopelagic depths. Corycaeids are specialised visual predators who utilise raptorial appendages to capture small prey. There are seven genera, and 39 species. See Boxshall & Halsey (2004: 491) for more details as well as a key to the genera.
