Adult readily attacks humans, cattle, oxen, foxes and fowl; major pest in many parts of northern Australia; potential vector of Dengue and Ross River viruses; aquatic stages found in swamps, lagoons and creeks; larvae will attach to roots of a variety of host plants including reeds (Eleocharis[Cyperaceae]), rushes (Typha [Typhaceae]), the floating duckweed (Lemna [Lemnaceae]) and Nymphaea [Nymphaeaceae] plants.
