Introduction
The phylogenetic study of Fedosov & Puillandre (2020) suggests that this species is restricted to the western Indian Ocean. Australian records may represent Pleurotoma exigua Hombron & Jacquinot, 1848 from Torres Strait, (frequently treated as a synonym of C. exasperatus), however since the type specimen of that species is lost Fedosov & Puillandre (2020) suggested that a new species should be described. We retain C. exasperatus here until research on Australian specimens can resolve the issue.
