Genus Chromis Cuvier, 1815
- Chromis Cuvier, C.G.L. 1815. Observations et researches critiques sur différentes Poissons de la Méditerranée, et à leur occasion, sur des Poissons des autres mers, plus ou moins liés avec eux; par M.G. Cuvier. [In a report by A.D. = A.G. Desmarest]. Bulletin de la Société Philomathique de Paris 1814: 80-92 [88] [gender ruled feminine and name placed on Official List, see International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1986. Opinion 1417. Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 44(2): 141].
Type species:
Sparus chromis Linnaeus, 1758 by original designation.
Introduction
The generic name Chromis has been treated as masculine and feminine and is apparently from a common gender noun, which can be either masculine or feminine. The International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature ruled that the genus is feminine (Opinion 1417). It was often treated as masculine in early literature. Because of the confusion, we accept here the compound species names to be adjectives to be consistent with current literature.
