Tubiculous, branching coenoecium, frequently found in association with Cephalodiscus (Orthoecus) solidus Andersson, 1907, Cephalodiscus (Orthoecus) densus Andersson, 1907, and Cephalodiscus (Cephalodiscus) hodgsoni Ridewood, 1907, and siliceous sponges, Bryozoa, Alcyonaria, hydrocorallines, grey mud, stones, rocks.

Melbourne : CSIRO Publishing, Australia 298 pp. [44] (Cephalodiscus (I.) nigrescens is the only species of this subgenus to penetrate into the Antarctic, where it is the commonest species in the genus and probably circum-polar in its distribution; the BMNH holds extensive collections of this species made by the National Antarctic Expedition and the Terra Nova Expedition. The earliest record of C. (I.) nigrescens is from a station within 3' longitude of Coulman Is. where three pieces are supposed to have been dredged from 549 m, Jan. 1841 or Feb. 1842 by the Erebus and Terror Antarctic Expedition in the Ross Sea, see Ridewood, W.G. 1921.
