Miscellaneous Literature Names

• Cassidea Bruguière, 1789 [no included species. Sherborn, 1924, Index Animalium, 5: 1120, treated "Cassidea Perry, 1811" [Conchology: pl. 34] and "Cassidea Schumacher, 1817] as separately available names. However, although Perry used Cassidea without author, he included two species of cassids and one Melongena, and there is no reason why he would not have taken the name from Bruguière; Schumacher explicitly attributed Cassidea to Bruguière. Swainson, 1835, The elements of modern conchology: 18, had an entry for "Cassidea Sw.", but this appears to be only a different extension of the same name].

Introduction

Neave, Nomenclator Zoologicus, has entries for Cassis Lamarck, 1799 [Mémoires de la Société d'Histoire Naturelle de Paris, (an VII): 72] and Cassia (pro Cassis Scopoli) Lamarck, 1801 [Système des animaux sans vertèbres: 79]; Lamarck used Cassis without author, but clearly in the same meaning as Scopoli, with Buccinum cornutum Linnaeus as the only included species. We found no trace of the spelling Cassia. Classis [Scopoli, 1786, Deliciae florae et faunae Insubricae, 2, index: 115] is an incorrect subsequent spelling.
