Introduction

This subfamily comprises small to medium braconids, with the vast majority of species previously being accommodated in the nominal genus, Cardiochiles. However, following a recent phylogenetic revision, the subfamily has now been divided into 16 genera, 10 of which occur in Australia (Dangerfield et al. 1999).

The group is worldwide in distribution, but the majority of species are found in tropical/subtropical areas, or semi-arid deserts. The Australian fauna has been fully revised and comprises 22 species (Dangerfield & Austin 1995; Dangerfield et al. 1999). Cardiochilines are exclusively endoparasitoids of lepidopteran larvae, with some species being used as biological control agents in regions other than Australia.
