Genus Carcharhinus Blainville, 1816

Black Tip Shark

Introduction

The Carcharhinus species currently recognised from Australia follows that of Last & Stevens (2009). Separation of some species is difficult without molecular data or vertebral counts. Consequently, many early records cannot be matched with certainty to currently recognised species. Records from Whitley (1940) and Stead (1963) are often difficult interpret. The terms black tip shark often refers to more than one species in early literature. Similarly the name bronze whaler is often applied to a number of species.
