Introduction

The family Cytherellidae is the only living family in the order Platycopida.

 

Diagnosis

Dorsal margins of valves slightly convex, ventral margins straight or slightly concave. Inner lamella calcified only in outermost parts or not calcified. Left and right valves unequal; without true marginal pores, but false marginal pores. Contact groove of larger valve uninterrupted. Hinge without teeth. Muscle field elliptical, consisting of 2 slightly backward curved vertical rows of scars. Number of scars small. Surface more or less sculptured, never smooth. Brood chamber separated from carapace with vertical list. Appendages same as for order.
