Family CLOACARIDAE Camin, Moss, Oliver & Singer, 1967

Introduction

The Cloacaridae is a family of about 20 species of parasites that are usually found in the cloaca of turtles, where they are believed to disperse by venereal transmission (Walter et al. 2009). Most of the species were described and keyed by Fain (1968). A single species has been found in the respiratory tissues of an owl (Fain & Smiley 1989). Only a single species has been found in Australia, collected from a turtle in Queensland (Fain 1968; Domrow 1991). Bochkov & OConnor (2008) reviewed the Cloacaridae and related families, and promoted Cloacaridae to a separate superfamily. The placement of this superfamily in the Raphignathina is only provisional.
