Introduction
The list of Australian Cleridae taxa presented here, cataloguing 425 valid species, 54 valid genera, and five subfamilies, incorporates corrections to the most recent world Cleridae catalogue of Corporaal (1950) plus new taxa and taxonomic changes proposed since (viz.: Bartlett 2009a, 2009b, 2009c, 2010, 2013a, 2013b, 2019, 2021; Bartlett & Lambkin 2022; Bartlett & Szito 2013; Ekis 1975; Gerstmeier 1990a, 1990b, 1991, 2002, 2020; Gerstmeier and Seitner 2013; Gunter et al. 2013; Kolibáč 1998a, 1998b, 1998c, 2003, 2014; Mawdsley 2006; Opitz 2009, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017; Solervicens 2007; Winkler 1972, 1989). Taxa previously reported from Australia but deemed not to be established, or to have been described with an erroneous Australian type locality (J.S. Bartlett, unpublished), are listed below as ‘excluded taxa’ and omitted from the catalogue. Type specimen details were documented during visits to Australian and European museums by the compiler (J.S. Bartlett) or sourced from the literature (see above references since 1950 plus McKeown 1948, Britton & Stanbury 1981, Menier 1981, Döbler 1982, Ekis 1975, Leavengood & Garner 2014). Earlier checklists and catalogues documenting Australian Cleridae taxa include those of Gemminger and Harold (1869), Masters (1886), Lohde (1900), Schenkling (1910) and Corporaal (1950), with those of Lea (1902) and Semmens et al. (1992) limited to the species of Tasmania.
Cleridae is the second largest family, after Melyridae, of the cucujiform superfamily Cleroidea and comprises over 3,700 mostly predatory species assigned to approximately 330 genera (Gerstmeier 2014). The predatory habits of clerid beetles are highly variable. Larvae typically feed on slow-moving or immobile invertebrates such as lignicolous beetle larvae in their tunnels or invertebrate egg masses and pupae. Adults may be pollinivorous (Epiclininae) or predatory (other subfamilies). The biology of Australian clerid beetles has received little attention in the literature, with only a handful of papers devoted solely to the subject (Moore 1973, New 1978, Hawkeswood 1991a, 1991b, Karargiris 1991, Faithfull 1994, Langley 1994, Opitz 2002, Webb 2022). Froggatt (1916, 1924, 1925), Moore (1963) and Bashford (1991, 1994, 2004) document forest pest associations while Brooks (1948a, 1948b, 1965, 1969), Hawkeswood (1981a, 1981b, 1982, 1987a, 1987b, 1991c) and Opitz (2002) report on floral associations of anthophilous species.
The Higher Classification employed in this catalogue is centered around the molecular phylogeny of Gunter et al. (2013) with the basal position of Thaneroclerinae, following Opitz (2010) and Bocakova et al. (2015), reflecting its former family ranking (Kolibáč 1992). Recent changes in Clerinae (Bartlett 2021) including a preliminary system of tribes and subtribes, the lowering of rank of Hydnocerinae to a clerine tribe and the revised status of the former subfamily Anthicoclerinae to a subtribe of Hydnocerini, are followed here. The supertribes of Bartlett’s (2021) system are omitted here for practical reasons only, i.e., the ABRS taxonomic hierarchy does not recognise taxa of supertribal ranking. Taxa with reduced fourth tarsomeres are catagorised as Korynetinae sensu lato following Kolibáč (1997, 2010). Opitz’ (2010) system of multiple ‘korynetine’ subfamilies, only partly supported by molecular evidence (Gunter et al. 2013), is not followed particularly due to difficulties in separating Peloniinae and Tarsosteninae (Bartlett 2013b).

Balcus violaceus (Fabricius, 1789) [Schenkling's (1906) record of Balcus signatus Broun (a synonym of B. violaceus) from Australia is likely a misidentification of a specimen of Orthrius sepulcralis (Westwood).] — Schenkling, S. 1906. - Other Excluded
Gastrocentrum dux (Westwood, 1853) [the Australian type locality is likely erroneous as G. dux is well documented in India, Sri Lanka, Laos, Thailand and Burma (Corporaal 1950, Mawdsley 1999, Gerstmeier 2005) while not a single Australian-collected specimen of Gastrocentrum is known (J.S. Korynetes coeruleus (De Geer, 1775) [The single type specimen of Corynetes unicolor Chevrolat (a synonym of K. coeruleus) represents the only Australian record. Either the type locality of 'Australie' is erroneous, or the specimen represents an isolated detection, as no other Australian-collected specimens are known. Corporaal's (1950) listing of K. coeruleus as cosmopolitan is inaccurate.] — Corporaal, J. B. 1950. Coleopterorum Catalogus Supplementa. Pars 23 (Editio secunda). Cleridae. s'-Gravenhage : W. Monophylla terminata (Say, 1835) [The single type specimen of Elasmocerus picticollis Blackburn (a synonym of M. terminata) collected in Victoria likely represents an isolated detection of a non-established exotic species as no subsequent Australian-collected specimens are known.]
Necrobia violacea (Linnaeus, 1758) [Previous inclusion of Necrobia violacea in Australian faunal lists appears to be entirely based on it's erroneous listing as cosmopolitan in Corporaal's (1950) world catalogue. No Australian-collected specimens are known.] — Corporaal, J. B. 1950. Coleopterorum Catalogus Supplementa. Pars 23 (Editio secunda). Cleridae. s'-Gravenhage : W. Solervicensia ovata (Spinola, 1849) [Solervicens' (2001) opinion that the Australian type locality of Labasiella duboulayi Pic (a synonym of Solervicensia ovata) is erroneous is likely correct as no Australian-collected specimens of this Chilean species are known.] — Solervicens, J.A. 2001. No post-release specimens have been collected directly from the field.] — Morgan, F.D., Haskard, S. and Riggs, J. 1991. The biological control programme for Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff) in Australia.
