Shaffer et al. (1996) included 6 described species in this group for Australia. Now only three are recognised, none of which was among the original six. The genera assigned to Chrysauginae by Shaffer et al. (1996) are now placed in the subfamily Odontinae. Two futher chrysaugine species are known from New Guinea.

Chrysauginae are a predominantly New World group where they are represented by about 700 described species, with very large numbers of undescribed species. They exhibit a very wide range of forms in wing shape and markings, and the Australian species resemble the New World species in appearance, wing shape and markings and in the great length of the straight labial palpi. The characters of the genitalia and tympanal organs also suggest an affinity. Further research is, however, required to establish their exact relationship.
