Family CHEYLETIDAE Leach, 1815

Introduction

The family Cheyletidae includes about 74 genera and 370 species world-wide (Walter et al. 2009). The world fauna was reviewed by Volgin (1969). Most species are predators, and occur in very wide range of microhabitats, including soil and litter, the nests of vertebrates and insects, under bark, on plants and fungi, and in stored food. Some species may be beneficial, and contribute to the control of pest mites in stored food and house dust, and insects and mites on plants (Gerson et al. 2003). Others are parasitic or semi-parasitic on birds and mammals. A total of 36 species of Cheyletidae has been reported from Australia, in 25 genera. The species associated with vertebrate hosts were catalogued by Domrow (1991), and the family in general was reviewed by Gerson (1994). Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Cheyletidae were also reported by Tovey et al. (1975), Lowry (1980), Heatwole et al. (1981), James & Whitney (1993), Osler et al. (2000) and Proctor et al. (2011).

Two species recorded from Australia are now excluded. Womersley (1941) recorded Cheyletia flabellifera Michael from Australia but this was a misidentification of specimens that were later described as Eucheyletia womersleyi Volgin (Gerson, 1994). Womersley (1941) recorded Cheletiella pinguis (Berlese) from Australia (record repeated by Volgin 1969), but this was a misidentification of specimens that were later described as Ornithocheyletia lawrenceae Smiley (Gerson 1994).

Family DEMODECIDAE Nicolet, 1855

Introduction

Mites in the family Demodecidae are parasites of mammals, and are normally found in the hair follicles of their hosts, but may also invade other tissues (Walter et al. 2009). Heavy infestations can cause severe mange and other skin conditions in both livestock and wild hosts (Mullen & OConnor 2009). Humans are host to two species of Demodex, which occur in hair follicles and sebaceous glands around the face, and are usually not pathogenic. The Australian fauna of Demodecidae includes three genera and 18 species, collected from the skin of marsupials, bats, livestock animals, domestic pets, and humans (catalogued by Domrow 1991). Lee & Southcott (1979) recorded an unidentified species in this family from Australia.

Desch (1986) and earlier authors recorded Demodex ovis Railliet, 1895 from sheep in Australia. However this record appears to based on a misidentification of some other undescribed species. See Domrow (1991) and the present listing of Demodex ovis for details of this problem.

The correct spelling of the name of this family is Demodecidae, based on the type genus Demodex.

Introduction

In addition to the named species listed here, unidentified species of Demodex have been reported from Australia by Beveridge & Barker (1976), Domrow (1991, 1992) and Kwak & Reed (2017). Hutt & Shipstone (2015) reported an unknown and distinctive species of Demodex on captive rats in Queensland.

Species Demodex musculi Oudemans, 1937

Introduction

Demodex musculi is a parasite of the house mouse, and occurs in laboratory mouse populations. Izdebska & Rolbiecki (2015) recorded this little-known species from Australia without explanation. Despite a search of published and unpublished sources, I have not been able to trace the origin of this record. The presence of this species in Australia must be considered as unconfirmed.

Species Demodex ovis Railliet, 1895

Introduction

There appears to be some doubt about the identity of the species of Demodex that occurs on sheep in Australia. Desch (1986) reported a species identified as Demodex ovis Hirst, 1919, from sheep at Glebe, Australia. However Hirst (1919) did not describe D. ovis as a new species, but instead reported on Demodex canis var. ovis Railliet, 1895 (= Demodex folliculorum var. ovis Railliet, 1895). According to Domrow (1991), Demodex aries Desch, 1986 is a synonym of D. ovis Railliet, 1895, and the Australian species D. ovis sensu Desch is a different, undescribed species. Domrow (1991) concluded that all reports of D. ovis in Australia have been based on misidentifications, including those of Roberts (1952), Murray (1959), and Desch (1986). Bukva (1990) reported three species of Demodex from sheep, so the identity of the Demodex on sheep in Australia must be considered as unresolved.

Family HARPIRHYNCHIDAE Dubinin, 1957

Introduction

Mites in the familyy Harpirhynchidae are ectoparasites that occur on the skin and feathers of birds and under the scales of snakes (Walter et al. 2009). The species that occur on snakes have sometimes been placed in the separate family Ophioptidae. The most extensive recent study of the family is by Bochkov et al. (1999), who recognised 14 genera. Domrow (1991) reported three species of Harpirhynchus and three undescribed species of Harpypalpus on Australian birds, and a single species of Ophioptes from a snake. Those totals have increased to ten species in six genera as a result of recent research.

Family PSORERGATIDAE Dubinin, 1955

Introduction

Mites in the family Psorergatidae are ectoparasites that occur on the skin of mammalian hosts. They can cause dermatitis, mange and other serious skin conditions in livestock and wild species (Walter et al. 2009; Mullen & OConnor 2009). The classification, phylogeny, and host relationships of the family were comprehensively reviewed by Giesen (1990), who listed 70 species in three genera. The Australian fauna includes only two species as catalogued by Domrow (1991). One of those species is an endemic parasite of bats, and the other is the economically important sheep itch mite Psorobia ovis, which was previously known as Psorergates ovis.

Family SYRINGOPHILIDAE Lavoipierre, 1953

Introduction

The Syringophilidae is a family of parasites that feed on the quills of feathers in a wide variety of birds. It is likely that thousands of species await description (Walter et al. 2009). Domrow (1991) recorded only two species from Australia, one described and one undescribed. Recent research has increased those numbers to 17 species in 13 genera, but Australia's 700 species of birds are likely to harbour mnay more species. Glowska et al. (2015) provided an updated list of the world species of Syringophilidae.

Genus Syringophilopsis Kethley, 1970

Introduction

The genus Syringophilopsis Kethley was known from Australia only on the basis of an undescribed species. Womersley (1941) misidentified this species as Syringophilus totani Oudemans (see Domrow, 1991). Glowska et al. (2015) provide an updated list of the Australian Syringophilidae and other Quill Mites of the world.
