Introduction
The single species of basking shark, Cetorhinus maximus, is often included in the family Lamnidae, but is here assigned to a separate family, the Cetorhinidae. Compagno (2001) and Last & Sevens (1994, 2009) treated the species in detail.
The basking shark is distinctive in having exceptionally large gill openings. It is found worldwide, primarily in tropical regions, is a plankton feeder and ovoviviparous, and reaches about 10 m in length (Last & Stevens 1994).
