Suborder CERIOPORINA Von Hagenow, 1851

Compiler and date details

July 2001 - Dr Philip Bock

Introduction

This suborder was first distinguished by Von Hagenow (1851) and founded on Upper Cretaceous fossils. Borg (1933) referred the Recent genera Neofungella, Heteropora, Canuella and Densipora, within the single family Heteroporidae, to his division Heteroporina, now considered synonymous with Cerioporina. Colonies may be massive and mound-like, or erect and cylindrical or lamellate. Zooids are long and tubular, opening on all surfaces of the colony, and with transverse diaphragms; autozooids and kenozooids occur with equal frequency. Calcification is cryptocystal and minutely porous. The brood chamber is a common, colonial, extrazooidal space.
