Introduction
Cercozoans form a clade in the group Rhizaria in the supergoup SAR. They are a diverse assemblage lacking distinctive morphological or behavioural characters, but are strongly supported by molecular phylogenetic studies. Members comprise amoebae and flagellates that feed by means of filose pseudopods (filopodia) and one major group is the Imbricatea (amoebae with secreted siliceous scales). The Cercozoa is sister to the Retaria containing the Foraminifera (amoebae with branching/anastomosing filoipodia (= reticulopodia)).
