Family CARPOGLYPHIDAE Oudemans, 1923

Introduction

The Australian fauna of Carpoglyphidae includes only two species. The dried fruit mite Carpoglyphus lactis is a cosmopolitan inhabitant of stored food such as dried fruit, powdered milk, potatoes, cheese, and similar substrates, and also occurs in honeybee hives (Hughes 1976). Other species of Carpoglyphus have been collected in flowers, vertebrate nests, on dead insects, and in domestic habitats (OConnor 2009). The other Australian species provisionally placed in this family belongs to the enigmatic genus Pullea Canestrini, which was based on a brief description that lacks important details, and cannot be recognised.
