Suborder CANCELLINA Gregory, 1896

Compiler and date details

July 2001 - Dr Philip Bock

Introduction

The name Cancellina is used here in place of Cancellata. This suborder was first defined by Gregory (1896) for the Horneridae, all species of which develop erect branching colonies in which the cryptocystal (i.e. interior) calcification thickens continually during growth. In later ontogeny calcification is longitudinally channelled, or 'cancellate'. Borg (1926) introduced the division Pachystega, effectively a junior synonym of Cancellina. Subsequently (Borg 1944), he further defined the division and described three new families from Antarctic materials. Zooids open on a defined frontal surface. The ancestrular zooid is erect, elongate and unjointed. Embryos are brooded in a gonozooid which expands onto the abfrontal surface of the colony at a dichotomy. Six families were included by Bassler (1953).
